| How do I connect my game console, TiVO or VoIP device? | Any device seen on a VBNet network for the first time has to be registered. When a device such as a game console like XBOX or Wii comes online, it can't make it through the registration system because there is no built-in browser. This also applies to any device such as TiVO or VoIP phone that needs access to broadband, but doesn't have a built-in browser. NOTE: Playstation 3 does come with a browser and so should be able to make it through the process without issue. Please follow the instructions at our device registration page to get your device online. |
| Can I use my own wireless router? | You are welcome to use a wireless router provided you secure it and plug it into the proper port. Failing to do so results in having the device suspended from our networks. For general guidelines on securing and connecting wireless, please check our Wireless Routers page. |
| Who do I call if I have technical problems? |

| How do I setup my computer for high-speed Internet access through VBNet? |
Please visit our support page for detailed instructions on configuring your computer.
|
| Does VBNet have a firewall? |
VBNet does not have a firewall that blocks outgoing connections to the Internet; however, due to VBNet's use of Network Address Translation (NAT), you can not run a server on your computer that is accessible from the Internet without an upgraded service plan. While NAT helps to protect you from malicious Internet users, certain programs that require the use of servers may or may not run correctly. If you are a power user, a gamer or need to remotely access a service running on your computer one of our upgraded service plans may be right for you. |
| Why don't some of my multiplayer games work? |
They may not work because they require a server setup on your local computer and because of VBNet's use of NAT. See the questions "Does VBNet have a firewall?" and "What is NAT?" |
| What is NAT? Why does VBNet use it? |
NAT (Network Address Translation) is a technique that allows a group of Internet users to share one or a few IP addresses. When your traffic passes through a NAT-enabled router, the router changes your IP address from the one on your computer to the router's IP address. When your traffic comes back to the router, the router knows that the traffic is destined for your computer so it changes the destination IP address back to your computer. |
| What kind of equipment and cables do I need to make this work? |
In order to use VBNet's Internet service, you need certain pieces of equipment. We have an ethernet based network so you need an ethernet card or network adapter for your computer. You will also need an ethernet/network cable (Cat-5, Cat-5e, or Cat-6) that looks similar to a phone cable, but the jacks on the ends are slightly wider. These items are usually available at local computer and electronics stores, office supply stores and game stores. If you have any more questions about what you need, please call us at 407-283-7852. |
| Can I run a server? |
You can not run servers on our networks without an upgraded service plan. |
| What is VBNet mail server address? |
Our SMTP server address is mail.vbnet.net |
| I get a SMTP Relay error when sending e-mail. How do I fix it? |
The error message you're seeing is because the SMTP server you're trying to use has access controls on it that prohibit you from using it from another network. While you're using VBNet's network, you may use our SMTP server to send your e-mail. Please see the question "What is VBNet's mail server address?" for the address of that server. |
| What is DHCP? Why does VBNet use it? |
DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. VBNet uses it to ease the distribution of IP addresses which are needed to connect to the Internet. This means that once a customer's ethernet jack is enabled for high-speed access, the customer just needs to plug in his computer and reboot and Windows and Macintosh computers, unless they are configured otherwise, will use DHCP to get an IP address. This allows the customer to get up and running as quickly as possible. Static IPs are available with an upgraded service plan. |
| Does VBNet have a news server? |
No, VBNet does not have a news server. We recommend that you visit a web site like http://groups.google.com/ for newsgroup access. |
